Postoperative Suggestions and Guidelines



BLEPHAROPLASTY SURGERY

NOTE: ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING

MEDICATIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH FOOD

IMMEDIATELY AFTER SURGERY AND FOR THE FIRST 48 HOURS

  1. Resist vomiting if possible, even if nauseated – medication for nausea can be prescribed as needed.

  2. Regular diet, but avoid foods that require excessive chewing for 1-2 weeks. No alcoholic beverages.

  3. Get up to go to the bathroom. Rest and relax otherwise. You should walk with assistance no less than once the first night. Try to flex and extend your feet when resting to help prevent blood clots.

  4. You need someone to be with you at least the first night and you need to be within 30 minutes of the office.

  5. Do not take any blood thinners (unless otherwise instructed).

  6. Avoid blowing your nose. Wipe your nose gently with tissues. If you sneeze, try to keep your mouth open.

  7. You may wear cool packs on your upper and/or lower eyelids as needed while awake, change frequently.

  8. Brush your teeth gently with a soft toothbrush only.

  9. Wear clothing that fastens in front or back for 1 week. Avoid slipover sweaters, tight tee shirts, and turtleneck.

  10. Absolutely avoid tanning for 6 weeks after surgery.

  11. You may begin to drive when not taking narcotic, or sedating medications.

  12. No strenuous activity for 6 weeks, unless otherwise instructed.

  13. You may begin taking anti-inflammatory medications such as Motrin after approximately 48 hours and once cleared by Dr. Jones and if you have no medical contraindications such as stomach ulcers.

  14. Rest and/or sleep with your head elevated for the first week after surgery.

  15. You may use eye drops or lubrication as needed to keep your eyes moist after surgery.

  16. Do not wear contacts for the first 2-3 weeks following surgery.

CALL US IF:

  1. Large amount of bleeding.
  2. Temperature over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Shortness of breath
  4. Excessive pain or swelling of the eyes
  5. Vision changes or pain with eye movement
  6. Other concerns
